The history of American barbecue begins with the country's founding, and the original enslaved pitmasters were critical to the popularity and spread of barbecue across the United States.

During the talk, Freeman will explore the origins of American barbecue, the legacy of Black pitmasters throughout the centuries, and how their contributions are on our plates today.

Deb Freman's podcast Setting the Table explores the stories and histories of African -American cuisine and foodways. The podcast is part of the Whetstone Radio Collective- creates storytelling dedicated to food origins and culture with original content.
